We are learning about strong and stable structures in science. One of our 'challenges' was to create the tallest tower that can hold a load (book). We learned that triangles are strong shapes and triangulation is used to brace square and rectangular shapes. I think we are ready for the weight test!
In Math, we are learning how to extend and create number patterns. We are learning to compare two and three digit numbers. Today we practiced estimation and investigated how big is 100! We estimated how many pumpkin seeds were in the jar. Then we counted the actual amount. We decided to group the seeds into piles of 10. We found out that 10 10's equal 100... that was the easiest way to count- we like friendly numbers. We also found out that 100 seeds is not very much! Our thoughtful guesses were not very close to the actual amount. We found more items in the room to estimate and count. There are many things to consider when estimating amounts.
We learned that when counting a large amount, sets of 10 work the best. We had to make sure that our sets were counted accurately (ten in each). We decided to organize our small groups into columns of ten groups of ten (that's 100 in each column!) so that it would be easy to count. Then we found that ten columns of ten equals 1000. We noticed that if we were to add just 4 more units (ones) the number would change to 1300. The units would turn into a rod and the rods would turn into a flat. Place Value is important when understanding numbers! My favourite part of grade 3 was when we went on field trips, like swimming and track, and when we celebrated birthdays. by Gurjap and Minh
Our favourite part of grade 3 was when we had craft day and track because for craft day we got to do some fun art with our family. We liked track because we got to do some fun activities together.
