Math
The students will be using the 'Math Makes Sense' text book as one of the resources for our math program. The students will learn mathematical skills during each strand in our curriculum and will learn problem solving skills and strategies to help them work through and solve math problems effectively. Each month we will begin new math concepts. Regular practice of skills, and connecting concepts to everyday activities, can help your child form connections and can create a deeper understanding of the concepts taught.
September / October
Patterning and Place Value We are beginning our unit on patterning and place value. Through activities, your child will discover that the position of digits in numbers tells what the digits represent, and that there are patterns in the way numbers are formed. In this unit we will learn: * to find patterns in a hundreds chart, and use these patterns to skip count. *count on a number line, and use a number line to compare and round numbers * to group 10s to count *to find ordinal numbers *to use Base Ten Blocks to model 2-digit and 3-digit numbers *to compare and order numbers *to investigate and describe 1000 Place Value is the foundation for number sense. A solid understanding of place value is essential to develop a strong number sense and an understanding of all computational methods. At Home: Remove the 10s and the face cards from a deck of cards. Deal 3 cards to each player. The player who can make the greatest 3-digit number with his/her cards gets 1 point. Return the cards to the deck, shuffle, and deal again. The first player to get 10 points is the winner. Repeat the activity making the least possible number. Have Fun......! January/ FebruaryWe are beginning our Unit on Data Management. During this Unit, we will be collecting, interpreting and organizing data. We will conduct surveys and draw various graphs representing the data collected.
At Home...... Have your child conduct a survey at home to help make an important decision. For example, he or she could use a survey to decide what flavour of birthday cake to order the the next family birthday. Your child should write a question to ask family members, then conduct the survey and record the results. Multiplication and Division We have just begun our unit on multiplication and division. Multiplication and division are basic computational skills that children use often, and skills that children must master to succeed in higher levels of mathematics. Your child will develop strategies for multiplying and dividing whole numbers. They will use multiplication charts, counters, and calculators. We will: *relate multiplication sentences to repeated addition *use arrays to multiply and divide *discover patterns *learn rules for multiplying (by 1, 0, 10,) Talk to your child about the importance of learning his or her multiplication and division facts. Find opportunities to practise these facts with your child to build confidence and to establish a solid foundation. Motion Geometry

November / DecemberAddition and Subtraction Strategies
We are starting our unit on patterns in addition and subtraction. We will develop strategies for adding and subtracting numbers by using addition charts, mental math, estimation, Base Ten Blocks, and paper and pencil. Students will: *Describe properties of addition *Recall basic addition and subtraction facts *Identify and apply relationships between addition and subtraction *Add and subtract 2-digit numbers *Use mental math to add and subtract *Estimate sums and differences *Add and subtract 3-digit numbers The ability to use a variety of strategies to add and subtract leads to the development of a strong sense of number. Numbers are all around us and the skills taught in this unit are essential for daily living. At Home: Play Store with your child. Price some of the items in your home in dollars. You are the shopper and your child is the cashier. Have your child add the cost of the items you buy. Roll a number cube 4 times. Use the numbers to make two 2-digit numbers. Have your child subtract the lesser number from the greater number. Repeat the activity, this time rolling the number cube 6 times, making two 3-digit numbers. Cool Math 4 Kids Lessons, Games, Activities - free online cool math lessons, cool math games, fun math activities, math flash cards to print, calculators and more! Geometry We have begun our unit in geometry! We are learning to describe, name and sort figures according to their attributes. We are learning to describe angles, congruent shapes, and solve geometry problems. At Home... When you are at the grocery store, look for items on the shelf that have the same size and shape, then have your child name the solids. For example, a Toblerone bar is a triangular prism, and a cereal box is a rectangular prism. March - Measurement
The children will explore time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analog clock, and to the nearest minute on a digital clock. They will work with money amounts to $10, measure temperature in degrees Celsius, capacity in litres and millilitres, and mass in grams and kilograms.
We will: *use calendars to show the passage of days, weeks, and months *use analog and digital clocks to measure time *tell and write time *use a thermometer to measure temperature *count money, make change, and read and write money amounts *measure the capacity of a container in millilitres and litres *measure the mass of an object in grams and kilograms Here are some activities you can try with your child: *have your child count the weeks until her or his next birthday *have your child mark important dates, or dates for recurring events, on a calendar *ask your child to tell the time at home *when shopping, have your child identify items sold by capacity (mL or L), and items sold by mass (g or kg) *have your child help measure the ingredients during preparation of meals |
